Binance Security Incident Puts Estimated $6.3 Billion at Risk
Earlier reporting by BleepingComputer described suspicious transfers from Binance hot wallets and an investigation into a potential $5.8 billion breach. The publication cautioned that the earlier figure represented holdings across wallets tracked by Arkham Intelligence, rather than a confirmed amount stolen. Binance's subsequent statement provides its own estimate of the impact.
According to Binance's preliminary investigation, a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop may have enabled an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The company said it had found no evidence of a wallet private key leak. It has not presented that initial explanation as a completed forensic finding.
The response includes restrictions on affected assets. BleepingComputer reported that Tether chief executive Paolo Ardoino confirmed freezing more than $1.567 billion in USDT, while Circle chief executive Jeremy Allaire confirmed more than $800 million in USDC linked to the incident. Those reports preceded Binance's larger aggregate freeze estimate.
Binance said it revoked the affected address authorization and engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover funds. It pledged to cover all losses using its SAFU fund and company funds, and to publish updated Proof of Reserves after remediation. These remain company commitments as the investigation continues.
Binance said a detailed technical post-mortem would follow once the investigation was complete and facts verified. For customers monitoring the disruption, BleepingComputer reported the exchange's warning to avoid unofficial links, messages and requests for account information. Binance directs users to official channels for updates.
